Karyes is a beautiful amphitheatre village, located southwest of Vrontados and south of the city of Chios.
One of the most interesting features of Karyes is that there is plenty of refreshing water. In the center of the village, under the coolness of the plane and the walnut trees, the visitors can enjoy the local delicacies along with ouzo and followed by a Byzantine coffee. During the summer, two very famous events fill the villages with a colorful crowd: The festivals of the Churches of Theotokos and of Santa Marcella.
The population accounts about 700 residents, most of them working as breeders, merchants, construction workers and civil servants. There are also lots of people coming from other areas working there, who yet always keep their hometown in mind.
Following the road leading to Nea Moni, one faces the top of Penthodes with the monastery of Saint Mark (Agios Markos). Inside the monastery is the burial ground of Parthenios, the founder of the monastery.
