Walking and Climbing
There are many interesting paths to explore the natural beauties of
Chios and the local species. Most of these routes are on the mountains or in
areas not very suitable for inexperienced nature-lovers. Because of the high
mountains there are many good climbing sites and some of them are a real
challenge. You can contact some local fans for more info about climbing and
cave-exploring in Chios.
Cave exploring
Chios has over 70 caves, ranging from small holes to fairly large
cave-complexes (including under-water caves). Many caves are either
difficult to reach or need special equipment and skills. Most of the caves
have been explored, at least partially, but none of them is equipped with
facilities for tourists.
Riding
Chios doesn't have a riding club and only a few people own horses
today in the island, but it is always possible to rent a donkey or a mule in
some villages if you want to go for a ride.
Beach sports
All the beaches in Chios are public and open to any visitor. Only
Ormos Lo beach (repeatedly rewarded with the E. U. blue flag for clean
beaches) has an entrance fee. Facilities on the larger beaches (such as
Karfas) include: canoes, pedals, games fields etc.

Swimming
Swimming is possible in Chios from May to the end of October,
since the sea temperature is above 18 degrees Celsius during the above
months. Nude bathing is not permitted in public beaches; but the existence
of many quiet and relatively isolated beaches makes it possible.
Snorkeling and underwater swimming, SCUBA diving
Snorkeling and underwater swimming is permitted and equipment can
be bought or rented. Underwater fishing with a spear gun is also allowed.
The water is very clear and the underwater environment has a great
variety, thus offering true pleasure to all sea-fans. Scuba diving (diving
with breathing apparatus) is forbidden in Greece outside organized areas.
Chios is one of the few places that offer a specialized area where you can
enjoy SCUBA diving.
Wind-surfing and jet-skiing
Available in most of the major beaches in Chios.
Sailing
There is a long-held tradition from the local marine clubs (Chios
Nautical Club, PEKEV, and many others). Also, small motor boats can be
rented for picnics.
Fishing
Sea fishing is ideal in summer and boats and tackle can be easily
rented at least near the city of Chios. No license is needed for fishing.
Football (soccer), basketball, and volleyball stadiums and fields
can be found in almost any village, since these sports are very popular. A
few tennis courts also exist near the city of Chios. Motto-cross is also
quite popular, but the tracks are poorly organized.
