Karyes is a beautiful amphitheatre village located southwest of Vrontados and South of the town of Chios.
One of the most interesting features of Karyes is that there is plenty of cool water. In the center of the village, under the coolness of the plane and the walnut trees, the visitors can enjoy the local delicacies along with ouzo and followed by a Byzantine coffee. During the summer, two very famous events fill the villages with a colorful crowd: they are the festivals of the Churches of Theotokos and of Santa Marcella.
The population is of about 700 residents, mostly of which are breeders, merchants, construction workers and civil servants. There are also lots of people coming from other areas (immigrants), who always keep their hometown in mind.
Following the road leading to Nea Moni, we face the top of Penthodes with the Monastery of Saint Mark. Inside the Monastery, there is the burial ground of Parthenios, who is the founder of the Monastery.
